It’s been a long time….

If you’ve been wondering why I haven’t blogged in a while, it’s because it’s been quite a hectic couple of weeks. Job Ready has got really intense and the young people have had to get through a lot of work, which obviously means more marking for me and Lola. But don’t worry; I will fill you in with what has been going on.

Just watch this space!

Job Ready Day 6: The Job Ready Challenge!

Young People at one of the destinations on the Job Ready Challenge.

A little bit of background on the Job Ready Challenge:

The young people are given a list of 12 places in London and are split into teams of four; they would then be required to plan the route, work out the budget and allocate roles for each member of the team. The idea being that they would use what they learned over the past five days to execute their plan.

The Rules:

  • Pictures must be taken of each destination, with all members in the photo
  • Photos must not be taken by anyone in the team
  • All members must have role within the team
  • The challenge cannot start until all members of your team are present

Once they all came back to the Job Ready training room , they were put in front of a panel and questioned. Points where given based on their performance on the day.We had a guest appearance from Mamun (Youth Ambassador Coordinator) who really grilled them. The points are then tallied up and the judges deliberated on the verdict.

The young people being put under the microscope by the judges (from right: Mohammed, Mamun, Lola, Jax)

The winners where team “Are we there yet”  who really performed very well despite the arguments at the beginning. Well done!!

Next week we start on the Preparation for Work unit. This is where the hard work starts and the world of work begins!

Job Ready Day 5: Time Management

Do you sometimes find yourself with no time on your hands? Maybe you find that you spend a lot of your time sleeping or playing computer games. Well, today’s Job Ready session we ran some exercises to find out how we spend our time and what can we do to minimize waste and maximise productivity. A lot of the students were surprised at how much time they waste getting ready to go out or “chillin”.

Job Ready Day 4: Equal Opportunities & Self Awareness

A picture of young people doing an exercise on perception of others.

It was a really enjoyable and tiring day, I think we learnt a lot about each other and how we judge others. I know it sounds bad but we all judge people by their appearance but it is only wrong when we act upon it.

We also broke the news to the class on what the Job Ready Challenge consisted of; let’s just say that it will be an interesting day on Thursday. Keep an eye out for Thursday’s post.

“Sometimes the things you do for free are the ones that benefit in the long run”

Today Habiba from the Kier Job Ready Programme came in to have a chat about the current volunteering opportunity that she has embarked on. She is finding it a bit difficult, however she understands that in the long run it would benefit her tremendously. Employers always have a keen interest in what you do outside work, especially if you have volunteered your time. This shows you have a life outside work and that you care about your community. It also shows dedication, commitment and that you have a good character.

So if you want to get ahead, volunteer!
